Summary

If you began your application before 26/11/2024 and you have not installed your chargepoint, please be aware that you can now submit your application once you have secured permission for the installation of the cross-pavement charging solution from the local highways authority. Please see the Eligibility section for information on permissions.

The grant provides electric vehicle (EV) drivers with support towards the costs of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints at residential properties if they are also installing a cross-pavement charging solution (e.g. a cable channel). You can get 75% off the cost to buy and install a socket, up to a maximum of £350.

You can apply for this grant if you:

  • Have not already installed your chargepoint (as this grant cannot be backdated)

  • Own or rent a residential property in which you live

  • Will install a cross-pavement charging solution alongside the chargepoint (for you to be eligible for this grant the cross-pavement solution must not be a temporary solution, such as cable covers or mats which can be placed on top of a cable)

  • Do not have private and exclusive access to off-street parking such as a driveway, garage or residential car park

  • Have adequate on-street parking

  • Have permission from your local highways authority for the installation of the cross-pavement charging solution. You must also declare in your application that you will obtain planning permissions as required by your local planning authority

  • Own or are responsible for an eligible vehicle

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles will publish guidance for local authorities in England on implementation of cross-pavement solutions shortly. In the interim this should not preclude local authorities from granting permissions for installation of cross-pavement solutions.

Eligibility

This grant provides support towards the costs of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints at residential properties when also installing a cross-pavement charging solution (e.g. a cable channel).  The cross-pavement solution must not be a temporary solution, such as cable covers or mats which can be placed on top of a cable.

Public authority permissions

The cross-pavement charging solution market is developing and a number of local authorities have been establishing or trialling policies for their area. However, not all local authorities and devolved administrations currently approve their installation. Where cross-pavement charging solutions are permitted you should contact your local highways and planning authorities to obtain the permissions required.

Local Highways authority permission:

Installation of a cross-pavement charging solution will require your local highways authority’s consent. You must contact your local highways authority to apply for and agree the installation of your cross-pavement solution in line with their policies. You must not install cross-pavement solutions on the public road network yourself. Your grant application will need to evidence your local highways authority consent for installation of your cross-pavement solution.

Planning permission:

You must obtain any planning permissions required by your local planning authority for your chargepoint and cross-pavement solution. You will need to declare in your application for the grant that you will do so.

The highways and planning authorities responsible for these permissions may be different departments within the same council or, in some areas, may sit within separate organisations. For example, in those areas of England where there are two tiers of local government, county councils are usually the local highways authority and district councils the planning authority.

Third party permissions

Outside of the permissions set out above, you must get all necessary third-party permissions, such as from a landlord, freeholder or managing agent of a flat, before you apply for the grant and install a chargepoint on the property.

There are some instances where private landowners control and manage the road and you may need to secure additional permissions in these instances.

Parking

The property must have access to on-street parking that is generally available outside or near your home, lawful and does not prejudice the safety and free flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Your planning and highways authorities (or where applicable private landowners) will determine whether a cross-pavement charging solution is suitable to serve your property.

This grant does not confer ownership over, exclusive use of, or reserved access to any on-street parking space outside of or near to your home and cannot guarantee you a parking space. You therefore may not have constant access to the funded chargepoint.

You will not be eligible for this grant if you have private and exclusive access to off-street parking such as a driveway, garage or residential car park.

Vehicle Requirements

This grant is only for people who have vehicles on the list of OZEV-approved electric vehicles.

You can apply for this grant if you:

  • Are the registered keeper of a new or second-hand eligible electric vehicle – the registered keeper is not necessarily the owner of a vehicle, but the person responsible for the car that pays for road tax and MOT.

  • Are assigned a company car.

  • Lease an eligible vehicle.

  • Are named by your employer as the primary user of an eligible electric vehicle.

  • Have ordered an eligible electric vehicle.

  • State that you own the chargepoint once payment is complete

  • Itemise the cost of the chargepoint and installation, including VAT

  • Ensure the chargepoint warranty meets the grant requirements

  • Ensure the associated vehicle lease is for at least 6 months

You must show your installer proof that you own or lease your electric vehicle.

Property Requirements

This grant is for domestic properties only. You must own or rent the property and be a resident at the property.

You will not be eligible for this grant if you have private and exclusive access to off-street parking such as a driveway, garage or residential car park

The property must be located in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. If your property is in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, it is not eligible.
